Taking Some Time to Myself

In case anyone is wondering what has happened to this blog, I'm entering a new phase in my life: I'm expecting my first child soon, and preparing to buy a house. Amongst this major upheaval, I have not had the space or patience to read the Yahoo message board which is often very caustic, and unfortunately, where I would get all of the news links that I post here. Instead of putting myself through that everyday(many times a day actually), I've taken a step back so that I can enjoy myself and my family more.

I'm still excited about Microvision and eagerly await the Show WX sales in the U.S.

Back from CES 2010 (2)

The conclusion I came to by attending CES, is that Microvision had the best tech for mobile projection. Its strengths give it unique advantages that are key to mobile use: size, no major heat loss, infinite focus, and I forgot to mention, no optics. Competitors will not be able to increase resolution without increasing the physical size of their panel and associated lens, and thus putting it at a disadvantage to mobile projection(size constraint). I felt the Microvision disadvantages just don't matter in mobile scenarios and the disadvantages from other products were a big deal.

On Friday morning, I got to see another Microvision exhibit: the game controllers and a 3d demo. The game gun was a lot of fun, and I think could easily make a product with mainstream adoption. The Aladdin game was also fun but didn't quite have the same immersive feel, perhaps because I'm older and it's not my type of game. Since Microvision didn't write the games, I assume the concept could be used for any other game which could open up a lot of possibilities.

And I was surprised to see the 3d demo. The demo consisted of two side-by-side SHOW WX's, a filter, a special screen and of course the glasses. This was an ability that I was not aware of, and it was pretty cool. I asked about the technology and it is made possible because it uses lasers(frickin') and their inherent, polarized light property. The filter and screen are available on the market for a couple hundred dollars. The software which does the rendering is free online, and it sounded to me like anyone with two SHOW WX's should be able to set it up fairly easily. Given what I said about the PicoP being best for mobile projection, I'm not sure if people would want to use it in a fixed manner like this, but it did demonstrates a unique ability and it was pretty sweet trick.

Back from CES 2010

I'm back from my first CES experience, and my first ever look at pico projectors of any kind. I saw the projectors of Microvision, Optoma, LBO, LG, and Samsung. Before I tell you about them, you need to know that I am human, I make mistakes, I'm writing this from memory, and I didn't take the most detailed look at each projector. So do not go through these words with a microscope. There are errors, I'm sure of it.

CES was huge, easily the largest event I've ever attended in my life. Was good I had a narrow list of things I wanted to see because it took me an hour to find each company and I only had one day to see them.

A couple of interesting things happened to me when looking at the projectors. I've been following this company for years now and have only seen things from videos. I'm glad I went because I had to rein in my expectations and base them in reality. If I can communicate one thing to you in this post, it is this: pico projectors are not home theaters.

So when we talk about brightness, colors, and such, it is pointless to compare them to full-featured projectors. And I can say, that I knew this already, but it didn't sink in until I finally saw them for myself.

Not having seen one ever, and reading so much about how awesome they are all this years probably gave me false, higher hopes than I should have had. But alas, all is not lost.

I arrived at the Microvision booth first. I first saw the SHOW WX under the indoor lighting conditions, and it was pretty good. I then went into the dark room and got the big viewing experience. It is definitely much better there, and you can project some massive sized images, but the rub is, it's not movie theater brightness. However, that the catch also is, movie theater projectors don't fit in your pocket! That's the key to understanding the pico projection market. This is not about producing a device that exceeds every projection spec possible, it isn't going to happen. It's about mobile projection, pulling a device out of your pocket and viewing images with your friends in that moment.

Regarding the speckle. Hearing about it over the years made me cautious. And I came to find that it didn't really bother me that much. However I was surprised that I could detect what the scanned lines. And I wondered if actually people were confusing that with speckle. I don't know. It did bug a bit, but it's more noticeable on still images and for videos it's much less noticeable. I also found that with speckle or the scan lines, that if you just relaxed or if you didn't go looking for it, your eyes could come to ignore it. It could also be a personal thing.

I was also able to see the infamous green line. Here I felt this problem has been blown out of proportion. It was only viewable in certain circumstances. I only saw it because I knew to look for it, I would not have noticed it otherwise. I think the only folks that are going to see it are those with home theater expectations. And let me repeat, since it is the biggest point I want to make, pico projectors are not home theaters. The SHOW WX is going to be about mobile displays. It's about bumping into your friends in the hall and showing them a funny kitten video you saw on YouTube, right then and there. And I guarantee no one in that scenario is going to be troubled by speckle, green lines, scan lines or any such defect.

Another thing to keep in mind, that all things in life have strengths AND weaknesses. This is a fact and there is no way around it. I'm giving an honest assessment here, trying to stay objective and not just covering the strengths only. But before I go into the strengths, let me talk a bit about what I saw from the competitors.

I got to play with the LBO. It's an interesting device that lets you interact with the projected image. Type, play simple video games, file browse images. It looks like it will be limited to table or wall mounted projection. I asked about green laser availability and he said they can use the common green laser available today because their engine is holographic(not sure what that means). They did have a demo of it being used as a projector though, but it was in a display case. The case was about 2 feet long and it was inside projecting an image about 1 x 1 foot. If I recall correctly, it had a label that said "Focus Free". I was dismayed at first but then I started to wonder, why is it being displayed in a case, in the corner of the room, where no one can touch or move it? I had assume then that it may not work as a mobile device for some reason, perhaps it was tethered to a computer, power supply, or just some other reason that I couldn't figure out. I think that if it could have been used as a mobile device, then they would have showcased it that way. But they didn't.

Optoma. I could easily see the corners were darkened. And their projections from indoor lighting conditions were not as bright. I got to experience it in the dark room and it looked much better. It was an animation movie, which I think makes all projectors seem impressive though. The model in the dark room also had features, like memory and file viewers for things like Excel and Powerpoint. I think he said it was $395.

I then got to see more Optomas, an LG, and a Samsung all together. The first thing I noticed was the Optomas and the LG were very, very warm and the Samsung was not. I asked about the heat and he said they've been running for 48 hours(plugged into a power supply) and the Samsung hasn't been on as long. He said they are all using the same chip. So I would assume the Samsung would also have the heating problem.

The Samsung looked impressive because it appeared to be a full-featured phone. I forgot to confirm if it really was a phone and not a projector in a case that looks like a phone. The rep said it was a prototype and not available anywhere. It was very slim. I think the resolution was lower, again though, I'm not an expert and this is all from memory.

When I played with the LG, the thing that would bug me(aside from the obvious hump) is the focus slider. The slider had a lot of friction and was troublesome to fiddle with. That's when it hit me, of course, infinite focus!

And that is where the SHOW WX really shines. All of the mobile projectors I played with required focusing. And I knew that already too, but I knew it intellectually, in my head only. It's not until you play with these things and get the real user experience that the SHOW WX really starts to make sense. When you take its weaknesses, (speckle, lines, and such), does it matter to the mobile user? Nope. When you take the weakness of the other projectors, like the focusing, does it matter to the mobile user? Yes, it's a big deal.

The strengths of the SHOW WX are about mobile projection. Mobile users aren't in dark rooms, they are out and about moving around, they want a bright display. They want infinite focus. They need low power consumption.

... more tomorrow.

New Demo from Microvision

On Displayground, we can see some new developments from Microvision. I'm thinking we will probably see a whole lot more of these types of applications as the world begins to absorb the possibilities. Anyone with an idea can get a hold of the PEK, plop it into a device and bam, instant awesomeness.

It's starting to feel like I can hardly even keep up!

Unboxing from Spain Part 2

Our Spanish blogger has uploaded a huge set of highly detailed images of Microvision's SHOWWX. Wow, very nice. Thank you Peb! Interestingly, he also has a VGA Dock, something none of us have heard about. His Tweet calls it Part 1. I hope and cannot wait to see more.

In other news, Intel has invited Microvision to a game demo. Looks like Intel is as fond of Microvision as we are:
“Intel believes that radical innovations like Microvision’s laser projection engine will continue to drive the gaming industry forward,” said George Woo, Intel Corporation’s Marketing Manager of the Intel Extreme Masters. “We are pleased to demonstrate how Microvision’s technology and the Intel® Core™ i7 processor Extreme Edition can create a new way for gamers to become immersed in the game world.”

Marco Polo - Europe to Asia

Now that we are certain Vodafone is the European carrier, one of my older speculative posts has a little more meaning... There is a connection between Mint, the Asia-Pacific distributor, and Vodafone. You can see that Vodafone is listed as one of their resellers.

If this pilot program goes well for Vodafone in Spain, it's not hard to imagine it rolling out in Australia, New Zealand, or India almost instantaneously via Vodafone. And obviously, the other countries of Europe...

Unpredictable

What's great about a technology that changes the way information is displayed, is that it will change the way people behave. And since this tech is not yet mainstream, it's impossible to predict all the ways people can use it. I came across iPodsibilities today, a blog encouraging educators to use iPods as a tool for learning. It clicked with me immediately: That's genius!

Here is an impressive list (PDF) of reasons kids will respond to iPods in education. And of course, pico projection is one of them. As much as I love books, I sure can't convince my kid to carry one around. But her cellphone never leaves her side. So why not use that instead?

There is something really captivating about projected images, I think this is a great idea.

Uniden has updated their graphic slightly since the announcement. The hand model is probably there now to give people a better perspective on the small size. I also think the brand name and the Image by PicoP label is more visible than the previous graphic.

But that got me to wondering... are all private-label brands going to use the Image by PicoP label? If so, that will be a brilliant marketing strategy.

SHOWWX™ Receives 2010 CES Innovations Award

From a Displayground update, the SHOWWX™ was named an honoree by International CES Innovations 2010 Design and Engineering Awards in the Portable Multimedia Accessories category.

Laser-based pico projector mobile accessory that delivers stunningly colorful, bright, vivid, detailed WVGA-quality images--from 12" to 150" across--requiring no projection lens or focus adjustment. Plug/play from host's TV-Out or VGA.

Nikon's Coolpix took "Best of" in the Digital Imaging category. Not based on Microvision's light engine, but still good news as it shows the "wow factor" of embedded projection really captivates people. It won best of in the camera category with only a 40 inch projection image at 1 hour battery life, compared to Microvision's 150 inches at 2 hour battery life. Imagine the wow factor when Microvision's light engine comes in cameras and many, many other devices.

I will be attending CES 2010 to see the exhibit personally. I'm also looking forward to seeing the things hinted at in the last conference call:

The ability to, with high precision, diagnose and measure something and then display it. ...you will see some of the initial demonstrations of these applications next year starting at CES.

To Fulfill Both Customers

Slow news day today, here's some info from a previous press release.

...We expect the product to be available in selected Australian retailers and channel partners by November/December this year. The nature of the distribution agreement will mean we will continue to roll out the pocket projector in other select Asia-Pacific countries this year and well into 2010. We are currently in negotiations with several key partners throughout the region.

Like everyone, I'm curious to know when we'll see the Microvision branded Show WX in the wild. From another press release:

The Asian distribution partner and global consumer electronics OEM are both planning their own marketing launch activities and will provide specific details regarding timing and locations for initial product availability in the near future.
Microvision has begun shipping units to fulfill both customers.

So Mint is the distribution partner and Uniden is the OEM. Both are "planning their own marketing launch activities." We already know Uniden will be selling their brand online, at the least. That means soon we could be hearing about Mint's "negotiations with several partners" to rollout "in other select Asia-Pacific countries this year and well into 2010."

Several partners... this year... and 2010...

It's not all just Uniden, folks.

VIP Update

Those of you who signed up to the VIP Program got an email today announcing they've launched and shipped but quantities are limited, so it won’t be easy to get a SHOWWX for a little while longer.

They went on to explain why:

...distribution partners such as Uniden, Mint and our European distributor placed orders for the SHOWWX. As a result, we are not able to offer a dedicated sales program to VIPs this year.

I have to admit at first I was disappointed. It's more jealousy since I really want to get my hands on one. But I'm sure they have made the best business decision possible, selling it in a way which will be beneficial to the company in the long term. In that way, we'll hopefully have their amazing technologies in other products for years to come.

I found this part interesting... Microvision will update VIPs regarding where and how our distribution partners (such as Uniden and Mint) are planning to sell the SHOWWX and private-labeled laser pico projector.

We know that Uniden is going to sell the private-label soon. I wonder if that means Mint will be selling the Microvision brand somewhere?

Guess we'll find out: VIP members who choose to opt in may also receive offers from our partners.

Mint-Vodafone Relationship

Microvision's distribution partner Mint Technology has some interesting resellers and partners:

Mint Technology has established itself as a trusted supplier of well-priced, quality products and, because of this, we have build relationships with companies such as: ...Vodafone...

As mentioned earlier, Vodafone may be the yet un-named European carrier.

It's also nice to see Microvision listed as a Mint brand.

Next Week

If the Yahoo España news is true, next week could be very interesting. Reading the whole article(translation), and not just the portion mentioning Microvision, reveals some more great bits:

  • The latter(Vodafone/Blackberry/Nokia) may be purchased next week...
  • If the monthly commitment is 60 voice(plus data 15), the phone will cost 0.
Hopefully the ability to buy the phones "next week" also includes the ability to buy it with the Show WX next week.

And, with the plan, the phone is free. Now who in their right mind that just got a sweet Nokia N97 with video-out for free isn't going to buy a projector?

Friday, November 6, 2009

Is Vodafone the European carrier?

It is according to Yahoo España News(translation):

Vodafone also said that in view of the Christmas campaign plans to offer packages of various mobile phone models equipped with video output - including the N97 mini - next to a picoproyector SHOWWX of Microvision, separately priced around 300. ($450 US).

Purchase order announcement from a European carrier.
